clouds...

It's been quite rainy lately. Lots of summer thunderstorms to cool us down after hot sticky days.

the corner store (crazy. beautiful. life)

It's always lovely to hear of independent women starting their own independent businesses. Kylie Merchant (& team) have managed to turn a very dull Optometrists store into a boutique homewares 'shoppe' in  Richmond, NSW.  Check out their before  photos here.
My rubber stamp sets are on their shelves now (along with many other Australian designers).

back to school sale...

For many of us living in the Southern Hemisphere, the school year is about to begin. January always reminds me of covering books and crying at the school gate. It's such an exciting & scary time for students (both young & old). Encourage the student in your life by purchasing one of my handmade bookplate stamps or cotton hankies (for nervous sniffles).... and be happy knowing you'll help their first day go a whole lot smoother...!

an illustrated collection...

Hullo. Did you have a lovely Christmas ?  If you're anything like me, you may be struggling to get your mojo-momentum back this week. I've written my household checklist of chores, and am trying to ride my bike and draw something every day.

Today's illustration is a collection of Christmas gifts that arrived directly from Saint Nicholas himself.

If you're so inclined, here are a few links.....Nancybird , Kimochis, Snug

Happy New Year everyone! k x

polka dottie...

I love Yayoi Kusama's work. It's always uplifting, interactive and mesmerising.  Polka dots are her signature motif which she uses to explore themes of infinity & a never-ending space.

It's such fun to be given a sticker sheet on entry to The Obliteration Room and be told that you are not allowed to leave until every single sticky dot has been pasted on walls, furniture, plants or tea cups. Wheee!! Why is this such fun?  I think it's because it goes against all our gallery expectations of keeping our greasy fingers off the artwork. Instead, we get to participate, relax and forget about being a thoughtful, quiet observer of Art.  Love that.

Yayoi Kusama: Look Now, See Forever is on until 11 March 2012 at the Queensland Art Gallery (GoMA).  If you can't make it in person, you can do some virtual sticking here.

kokeshi joy...

I found these vintage kokeshi twins in one of my favourite shops in Bangalow. Aren't they amazing? Cira 1950/60....you can tell how old they are by the shape of the body, and their hair styles.

I've been playing around with their portraits this week, and it surprised me how old and authentic my prints look.  This has been a nice departure from my signature cute & quirky illustrations, and I'm quite excited about exploring new possibilities.

the corner store (scrumptious reads)...

Q: What do you get when architects start playing around with a few thousand coffee cups?

A: A fabulous new bookstore, of course.

Julie & Reyna of Scrumptious Reads (South Brisbane) commissioned a sculptural wonderland for their bookshop fit-out. The entire space is lined with paper cups, stacked along the walls and forming the bases of shelves and display tables. I love it ! It definitely draws on the House of Cards vibe, whilst feeling very grounded at the same time.  It's worth checking out their installation images here...

A specialty bookshop with a focus on edible delights, Scrumptious Reads stock foodie books & related gifts. What's more, co-owner Julie is quite the rubber stamp connoisseur and supporter of local designers !!    .....oh my goodness, what more could i ask for ??

So what designs did they select for their foodie customers ?*  Cow (mmm), Sheep (mmm), Chicken (mmm) and my favourite.... Rabbit & Mushroom (stew).

They love their apples, so I've carved them a little something...
